Day 20–Traveling to Southern Star CG, Van Horn, Texas

on Saturday, January 17, 2015

Well, we have been traveling for 20 days and have yet to come up with something new or different to do along this route. We took this route last year and made multiple stops  to see and do the things that interested us. . Every time we pass a sign that indicates a possible venue to check out, we say, we already did that! I guess we are in a good and bad situation.  Bad because we can’t find anything to do but good because we have  had the opportunity to experience  all these wonderful places.

We have friends that are on a cruise , so unable to visit them. Then our plans to go South to Galveston we put on hold because of the COLD weather.

Interstate 10 is a very long , boring lonely road. Texas is enormous and the majority of the state is flat and unattractive.

We arrived at  the Southern Star CG around 4:30 pm in the remote town of Van Horn. I  thought we might need to make reservations but Ron didn’t  think we needed to.

HE WAS RIGHT!

The new owner is very nice and brought us to our camp site # 2. After setting up and looking around at basically nothing we took Jewel for a walk.  We are right in downtown Van Horn so decided to walk on the main road. Amazingly, we thought we were back on Route 66. The town is run down and  looks like it has been bypassed by the major highway, just like Route 66.

We were pleasantly surprised to find that a great steakhouse sits about 0.1 miles from the CG. So we opted to try out Texas steak at the Van Horn Cattle Co. Steakhouse and Bar.

True to form Texas steaks are everything I expected and more. Delicious and cooked to perfection.

There were three or four other RV’s that came in for the night so we were not alone. This place is a good stop over because it is right off the highway and at $18.00 a night with Passport America a good deal.

We booked two nights because Ron wants to watch the playoff games tomorrow. We’re hoping for a Patriots win then on to the Super bowl! Go Pats! Our West coast Kelly will be rooting for the Hawks so “Go Hawks”  until the Pats win! LOL
