After another long and lonely road trip we arrived in Kelso, CA in the National Mojave Desert Preserve.

We knew we would be boon docking so made sure we had plenty of water on board and empty holding tanks.

We arrived at the Ranger Station around  1 pm and asked where we could park for the night. We had two options: go back 8 miles and dry camp at the Kelso Sand Dunes or drive 60 miles to dry camp at Hole in the Wall CG that has  pit toilets and water access but none available at the campsites.

We opted for the Kelso Sand Dunes. We were told we would have to drive 4 miles down a  graded dirt road and just pick a site  with a fire ring. Little did we know that the dirt toad was a wash board road  allowing us to drive at less then 10 MPH while our teeth chattered and our kidneys were shaken loose. LOL

There were not that many sites  with fire rings ( a must – or no parking allowed). We did find one big enough  to fit our MH and  settled in. We are approximately 12 miles from civilization (the Ranger Station Welcome Center) and  out in the middle of nowhere.  Ron’ dream camping spot.

Once we were settled in we decided to just enjoy the solitude and quiet.  Ron was taking pictures and when he was walking back to sit down he was looking down at the camera and walked into the bedroom slide. I was reading and heard a bang and saw Ron bounce backwards. I thought he had hit his eye  but it was actually his forehead. OUCH!!!

Initially the cut bled quite heavily but then stopped. We applied ice and luckily he didn’t get too much of an egg on his forehead.

Jewel fell in love with the place immediately and began digging her dirt bed.

So our pretty white dog is now the DDD dog again. Dirty Desert Dog!

Later that evening we enjoyed the beautiful skies that were crystal clear with thousands of stars.  It is great to be far enough away from ambient light that  we were treated to an incredible night sky.

Tomorrow we will explore the preserve.
