Day 36–San Diego Zoo, San Diego California

on Tuesday, February 3, 2015

We were up early dressed and ready to go to the zoo. Unfortunately a thick, marine fog had rolled in over the city and traffic was backed up for miles due to multiple accidents, so we were unable to get on the road until 9:30 am instead of our planned 8:30 am departure.

Ron took the extra time and went to the office to see if we could secure a third night in our current site. He was told there was a 30 RV caravan coming in so we would have to check back the next morning to see if our space would open up.

Did I mention the drivers here are worse then Boston. OMG, they are crazy, driving at warp speed, pulling out in front off you, crossing three lanes of traffic to take an exit!!! We felt we were on a race track not a highway. The other interesting thing here is that not all exits have exit numbers jus street signs.Quite a bit different then the rest of the country.

We arrived at the Zoo by 10 am and secured our  $47.00 per person tickets. We thought the ticket price was a little high but soon learned why.

The zoo is enormous and we were treated to some of the most interesting animals we have ever seen. We opted to take the bus tour and get a feel for the park.

I will have to highlight the animals of special interest to us. We were fortunate to be able to capture some great video and pictures of  animals  that we will probably never have the opportunity  to see again!

The Rhino was hanging around then decided to enter the pool  for a drink.

The zoo is huge so we tried to tackle it in a logical manner but that was impossible because we had to backtrack so many times to get to a new exhibit.

We finally found the Koala bears. They sleep 21 hours a day so indeed they were sleeping when we found the cute little guys.

Then we got to see the Panda who was sitting back eating bamboo for lunch.

We were also privileged to see Polar Bears up close and personal.

Later we stopped by the elephant exhibit and got to see an elephant getting a pedicure. The animal caretakers told us that the elephants get foot baths and pedicures weekly. The elephants are trained to stick their feet out the door to get the foot bath and pedicure. It was so cool to watch and looked like the elephant was enjoying it.

So you are asked: What do you do for a living? Oh, I give elephants pedicures! LOL

The very best exhibit for us was the Gorilla exhibit with the Mother Gorilla and her newborn baby.

Then there were the birds and flowers.

The flowers were beautiful but the birds were equally as beautiful.

We spent just under seven hours at the zoo and closed it down for the day. It was an incredible day and the most impressive and beautiful zoo we have been to. We would recommend  this to anyone vacationing in San Diego. There are too many animals, plants and birds to mention. Ron took over 200 pictures , but too many to post.

We hope to be able to get another night at the CG. Ron spoke with his cousin Bruce who lives close by the CG and we plan to get together with him sometime in the afternoon tomorrow.

While I made dinner Ron took Jewel for a walk and  got beautiful sunset pictures over Mission Bay.

Jewel loves sunsets too!
