Today we had hoped for another sunny, warm day but no such luck. The temperature never got above 45 and the sun was hiding all day until 5 pm when it made a brief appearance. The air is really cold and damp so feels more like 35 degrees.
Our first stop today was at the Route 11 Potato Chip Factory.
We were hoping to see them in operation but they were not making chips today. The woman at the counter told us that this is their slow season and it won’t pick up until Easter weekend. It will be non-stop with tourists until the middle of October. They make a variety of flavors and the Dill Pickle Chips are one of their biggest sellers. We tired them and indeed they are delicious. Needless to say we bought two bags of chips – one regular and one dill pickle.
Next we stopped at the Shenandoah Caverns.
Before seeing the caverns we took the a tour of Main Street of Yesteryear. It is a series of old window displays from department stores from over 50 year ago. Needless to say it was delightful to see the different displays – almost all animated.

We really enjoyed seeing the window displays, and it is nice to see that these have been preserved.
Then it was time to take the cavern tour.
It was not busy so we were privileged to have a private tour through the caverns and we didn’t have to walk up & down the stairs because they installed an elevator. Our guide reiterated the same info about slow season here but that beginning with Easter weekend it will be non-stop until the middle of October with long lines and overcrowding.

The caverns were a pleasant surprise. Neither Ron or I were expecting too much but as soon as we walked into the main corridor we were immediately taken by the beauty of Shenandoah Caverns.
We really enjoyed our private tour and we both rate these caverns among our top three favorites.
Next it was on to the American Celebration on Parade – A parade float museum.
Once inside we were treated to a variety of floats that have been used in many large cities across the country and at Presidential Inaugural Parades.
We cannot believe that we have driven this route numerous times over the years and never stopped until this trip. This was a real find for us and we enjoyed everything we saw and did today.
We stopped by the Yellow Barn to take a look. It is essentially a large gift shop but during high season they put on shows on the stage at the far end of the store.
We took a short ride around the area and drove through the Covered Bridge.
On our way back to the CG we spotted some unusual art work.
Some people are so creative!
Back at the MH we began preparing the final leg of our journey. To date we have been lucky enough to find CG’s that are open. Not so sure about the last few hundred miles. CG’s further north tend to open at the beginning of April so tomorrow night may be a rest area or Wal Mart stop before getting home on Thursday.
